Azulejo Series

"Almost every new structure has its moment in the limelight - shiny and new - beacons of modernity, marvels that point to a new urban future.Utopian ideals and optimism ... some stand the test of time with vigour, others slowly fade into the gritty city environment, ignored and invisible.

I wished to elevate their status yet again, for everyone to take a second look, but using one of the most traditional Portuguese methods - Azulejos."

The architectural Azulejo series are designs created using his many photographs of the less- celebrated structures of Lisbon. Each composition is created from structural details and elements which upon first viewing appear as traditional Azulejo designs but upon closer inspection reveal details such as raw concrete, peeling paint and the general overlooked architectural elements. Inspired by Lisbon's shopping malls of the 1980's, brutalist concrete, ruins, office blocks and the facades of unassuming apartments, all are celebrated in their own unique way within the artworks.
